It's time to return to Fathomsby and catch up with its strange, perverted and outlandish residents. See Harry Hall wallow in drunken regret. Join Dermot and Dorothy for dinner (and orgasmatron). Find out how Wonderful scratches that lonely nights itch. Learn the secret origin of DJ Frank Epstein. Discover what sordid thoughts Kathy Marr encounters when she arrives in town. Examine a two-dicked corpse with FME Imogen Redback. And meet Julia Gore, Jasper Badtouch, Bernie Clunge, Kristoph Plott and the uptight manager of Das Uberblick Hotel. It's our most depraved issue yet...

Written by me, with art by Adrian Bamforth, Kelvin Green, Rob Wells, Stephen Prestwood, Nige Lowrey, Andrew Cheverton, Martin Eden and Chris Askham. Front cover by Martin (and everybody else!), back cover by Chev. All the rest by Davey Metcalfe-Carr.

Sadly, the rising postal cost has meant I've had to put up the price to £2.75 an issue, but hopefully that won't deter you from enjoying the unique pleasures of Fathomsby in the book Broken Frontier called "delectably macabre" and Forbidden Planet described as "a freakshow you can't take your eyes off". Don't worry, the digital download is still just an incredible 99p!

To order the new issue, click here to visit my shop. New readers can also pick up a bargain batch of the first three issues at the knockdown rate of £6.50... while stocks last!

Many thanks to Rob Power at Comic Heroes Magazine for adding his voice to the ever-growing library of TMSAV reviews...

"...a twisted, League Of Gentlemen-esque tale exploring the dark heart of suburban madness... there are some great ideas running riot here."

Meanwhile, issue #2 should be on its way to the printers very shortly. Here's a few sneak preview images from Neil, Dave, Rob, Stephen, Nige, Tone, Ryan and Mark...

There's been a tremendous reaction to issue #1. Here's a small selection...

Tmsav_1_adrian
"This may be a freakshow, but it’s a freakshow you can’t take your eyes off... one of those first issues of a series that you finish and immediately want to reread, just to make sure you got everything." (Richard Bruton: writer, Forbidden Planet International.)

"Far more entertaining than 98% of today's TV. It should be a movie!" (Dave Taylor: artist, Batman, Judge Dredd.)

"Absolutely great story. Really weird, really funny and just an excellent read! You should definitely go and buy it. There's nothing like this out there at all." (Jane Habgood, reviewer, MOMBCast #115.)

"If you are a fan of League of Gentlemen, then Too Much Sex & Violence is the comic for you. A gloriously depraved and quirky selection of vignettes all settled around the 'not so quiet' seaside town of Fathomsby. Rol Hirst writes and corrals the assorted artists together to make this one of the more interesting reads this year." (Gary Erskine: artist, Hellblazer, The Filth, Dan Dare.)

"...a funny and refreshing new title... it gets our full support and recommendation." (Ace Comics.)

"A most enjoyable read... reminded me of Worthing, nicely weird and gripping." (Glyn Dillon: artist, Deadline; Shade, The Changing Man)

"I quickly forgot I was reading a comic. I was simply reading something well written and expertly put together - there's a lot of talent contained within these 28 pages." (Martin Pond: writer, Dark Steps)

"...a really engaging and unusual first issue..." (Nicolas Papaconstantinou: writer, Monkey On My Back)

"...extreme shocking for shocks sake is not the purpose of this book but there is at least one eyeball shooting out of its socket to keep it interesting." (Lee Sargent: artist, Quit Your Day Job)
"Reminds me of Gary Spencer Millidge's Strangehaven on a bad drug trip! If you like the dark humour of the League of Gentlemen then you'll like this comic!" (Selina Lock: writer/editor, The Girly Comic.)

"Rol’s a passionate and talented writer and deserves to be supported by his local community as well as his hordes of enthusiastic fans (of which I most definitely am)." (Daniel Hughes, blogger, Slawit.org.
(*Aww, shucks...*)

"Hail to Fathomsby!" (James Lindsay: writer, filmmaker, A Pessimist Darkly.)

"...superbly paced and dramatically rendered... you can never have to much of a good thing, and Too Much Sex & Violence is a very good thing." (Dan Powell: award-winning writer.:)

"...delectably macabre..." (Andy Oliver: writer/editor, Broken Frontier.)

"...beautifully overdone stuff." (Al Ewing: writer, Travelling Man.)

"There are some great lines in it too... It made me chuckle anyway." (Michael Barnes aka El Blondino, artist.)

And if that's not enough, read my Broken Frontier interview all about the book right here.

Issue #2 is on its way in early 2012... but if you haven't had the full Too Much Sex & Violence experience yet, visit the shop (above) and buy yourself an early Christmas present today.

The first issue of my new ongoing comic TOO MUCH SEX & VIOLENCE is now available to buy from Rol's Comic Shop.

Welcome to the northern seaside town of Fathomsby; home to retired super-heroes, monster DJs, mutant prostitutes, pier-owning gangsters, disgruntled policemen and a woman who knows exactly what you're thinking about, whenever you're thinking about...S-E-X.

The first issue was written by me, with art by Andrew Cheverton, Paul Rainey, Kelvin Green, Nige Lowrey, Mark Renhard, Martin Eden, Adrian Bamforth and Rob Wells... and everything else by Davey Metcalfe-Carr.

Get a brief taster below. The print version of Too Much Sex & Violence #1 is available to buy now for just £2.50 (including p&p to the UK - email me if you want a print copy but you live outside the UK).

If you're one of those people who prefers to read their comics on the computer screen, you can download a pdf version for the bargain price of just 99p (or whatever that converts to where you live).

Or if you'd prefer me and the artists to come round your house and act out the story in person... well, I'm sure that can be arranged. For the right price.

Wed, 06 Jul 2011 03:42:00 -0700 The Jock http://rolhirst.co.uk/the-jock http://rolhirst.co.uk/the-jock

Banner

The Jock began as a photocopied small press comic back in 1993 and ran for five years and twenty-seven issues (plus a couple of specials). Pretty respectable numbers for small pressers, and I'm still immensely proud of the work we did back then - me, Nigel, Tim, Adrian, Stephen, and all the other artists who contributed to the book.

The Jock had a loyal following, vocal readers who were passionate about the characters and the world in which they lived. We regularly ran 5+ pages of letters in an issue, and we counted among our readership names such as Warren Ellis (Planetary, X-Men), Dr. Will Brooker (Batman Unmasked: Analysing A Cultural Icon) and Tony Lee (Doctor Who comic).

Even today, people still ask, 'Hey, when's The Jock coming back?' Personally, I think the idea's rather past its sell-by date. When I created the book back in the early 90s, it was in reaction to major changes sweeping through the radio industry. That battle was lost a long time ago in the real world - YOURENT, the evil corporate enemy the Jock and his fellow freedom fighters were rebelling against, long since won.

Preview_pic

Getting on for ten years ago now, Nigel and I had the idea of restarting the book and pitching it to publishers. We'd had some interest from MTV, of all people, about turning The Jock into a short series of cartoons. It was one of those brief flirtations with success that have dogged both our careers. Encouraged by the attention, I worked up a four issue "Ultimate Jock" mini series to update the character and hopefully introduce him to larger audience. Only the first issue was ever completed, though we do still occasionally talk about finishing the strip and putting it out as an original graphic novel. But I think we both know the time has passed. History has left The Jock behind... hell, he still plays his music on CDs... and this was a comic supposedly set in the future!

Anyway, for all those who've demanded it (all... one... of you) here's the first issue of Ultimate Jock to read in full. Enjoy the nostalgia.

Thu, 17 Jun 2010 13:14:39 -0700 Reviews & Thoughtballoons http://rolhirst.co.uk/reviews-thoughtballoons http://rolhirst.co.uk/reviews-thoughtballoons So, "where's PJANG #5?", you may well be asking. Going by our regular 6-monthly publishing schedule, we must be about due another issue? Well, I do have half an issue, thanks to the sterling work of Kelvin Green on a little strip we called 'The Ex-Men' (no lawsuits there, then)... unfortunately, the rest of the comic is proving a little more elusive. There's a couple of top artists currently beavering away on strips - one you know from old, one you might not be familiar with - but no word as yet on when they'll see the light of day. Meanwhile there's a couple more people waiting on scripts from me (sorry guys!) - and always, I'm always on the lookout for new artists to join the PJANG family... so if you fancy drawing a story about why people just ain't no good, do drop me a line. In the meantime, for those of you hungering for more of my strips, do please check out the thoughtballoons website, a new collaborative writing site I've joined. Every week we choose a different comic character and each writer is tasked with producing a one-page strip about them. So far we've seen an excellent range of stories dealing with Iron Man, Molecule Man, Mephisto and Dr. Doom... with many more to come. Finally, many thanks to former Jock reader Andy Oliver for his thoughtful and incisive PJANG review over at Broken Frontier. Check it out, and add another great comics website to your favourites!

PJANG #4 has arrived at last, and yes, I've sold out. I'm going for the Heat market. They seem to be the only periodicals that still sell these days, so maybe I'll pick up some extra sales from gullible fools who think they can read about their favourite stars' relationship traumas or what's happening in the Big Brother house this week. Of course, they'll be in for a shock, because PJANG #4 is merely further proof that People Just Ain't No Good. It does feature a celebrity expose of sorts, in the lead strip drawn by Crazy Chris Askham. Then there's a question of marital infidelity and domestic vengeance as drawn by Riotous Ryan Taylor. Finally it's the return of Titanic Tony McGee with a little Twilight Zone homage we called 'Split'. Three great stories, with full colour covers by Nigel Lowrey and Davey Metcalfe - all for just £1.75. Read the previews below then click on the PJANG Shop link at the top of the page to buy.

Included in this issue… it’s the end of the world as we know it (and nobody feels fine), adolescent power realities, and the true story of how a teenager’s life was saved by both Morrissey and Bruce Springsteen.
